Where does the name Jane come from?

Jane is the medieval English form of Jehanne, an Old French feminine form of John, ultimately from the Hebrew Yohanan, “God is gracious”. Behind the Name says Jane became the most common feminine form of John in the 17th century, surpassing Joan. Wikipedia traces the same path through Latin Iohannes and the Greek Iōannēs.

Other forms of Jane

Janie, Janey and Jayne are familiar forms, and Behind the Name also links Jane to Janet, Janice, Jean, Joan and Joanna in the wide John family. Jan is a simple short form that works in several languages.

Well-known Janes

Jane Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice, Emma and other novels that reshaped the English novel. Jane Goodall documented chimpanzees at Gombe and became one of the world’s best-known primatologists and conservationists. And Jane Fonda has won two Academy Awards and remained a prominent activist across decades.

Jane’s popularity

Jane was a quiet classic for decades. US Social Security data has it in the top 100 from the 1880s through the 1950s, peaking at 40th in the 1940s and reaching its biggest count in the 1950s, when more than 82,000 American girls were named Jane. It left the top 200 after the 1960s, so most Janes today are in their 50s and older.

A few more things about Jane

Jane Austen’s novels were first published anonymously as “By a Lady”. Her name only became a brand after her death, when her brother Henry wrote a biographical note naming her. Today Jane is one of the most recognizable author names in English.

A notebook for every Jane

Jane’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Jane’s Notebook” on the cover tells Jane it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
