A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Beverly. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Beverly began as an English surname from the Yorkshire place name Beverley, from Old English elements often read as “beaver” plus a word for stream or clearing. Behind the Name says it was used for boys in the 19th century and became a common American girls’ name after George Barr McCutcheon’s novel Beverly of Graustark (1904). Wikipedia gives the same beaver-clearing etymology.
Bev is the classic short form, and Behind the Name also lists the spelling Beverley, which is still common in Britain. Some Beverlys use Belle or Lyn as casual pet forms, but Bev remains the one that shows up on name tags.
Beverly Cleary created Ramona Quimby, Henry Huggins and Ralph S. Mouse, and she received the National Medal of Arts. Beverly Sills was an American soprano who later led the New York City Opera and Lincoln Center. And Beverly D’Angelo played Ellen Griswold in the National Lampoon’s Vacation films.
Beverly was a Depression and wartime favorite. US Social Security data has it 92nd in the 1920s, 20th in the 1930s, 31st in the 1940s and 36th in the 1950s, when nearly 98,000 American girls were named Beverly. It left the top 200 after the 1960s, so most Beverlys today are in their 60s and older.
Beverly Cleary lived to 104 and kept meeting readers who grew up with Ramona. She once said she wrote the books she had wanted as a child in Portland, Oregon, when the library shelves seemed full of children who lived on farms, not in her neighborhood.
Whether Beverly is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Beverly on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Beverly’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
