Jada's Notebook is a lined journal with one name on the cover, hers. The name sits in flowing script above a soft pink watercolor apple blossom design.
Jada is an elaborated form of Jade, says Behind the Name. It came into general use in the 1960s and was popularized in the 1990s by actress Jada Pinkett Smith. The gemstone’s name comes from the Spanish piedra de ijada, “stone of the flank”, from the old belief that jade could cure kidney pain. A separate Hebrew Jada, meaning “he knows”, appears in the Old Testament.
Behind the Name lists Jade, Jaida, Jayda and Jayde as related forms, and Giada as the Italian equivalent.
Jada Pinkett Smith was born on September 18, 1971. Wikipedia says she acted in the sitcom A Different World, played Niobe in the Matrix films and voiced Gloria the Hippo in the Madagascar films. She co-hosted the talk show Red Table Talk from 2018 to 2022, earning a Daytime Emmy Award, and Time named her one of the world’s 100 most influential people in 2021. In 2019 she and Will Smith founded the company Westbrook.
Jada was a turn-of-the-century hit. US Social Security data has it at 88th in the 2000s, when more than 37,000 American girls were named Jada. Behind the Name says it ranked 92nd in Canada in 2005 and last ranked 835th in the US in 2022.
Jade is really two different stones, says Wikipedia: nephrite and jadeite. Nephrite is usually green, while jadeite runs from white through greens, including a rich emerald shade called “imperial”, to lavender and even black. In China, jadeite is known as fei cui, a traditional name in use long before the word “jadeite” was coined in 1863.
This is a notebook for every kind of Jada: the student, the list-maker, the diary keeper, the busy mom. Its 160 lined pages and 6" x 9" format suit daily journaling, study, meal plans, goals or gratitude notes. Plain lines mean no rules about how to use it. Her name on the front makes it easy to spot on a crowded desk.
Notebooks tend to multiply on desks and in drawers. One with Jada’s name on the front is instantly hers: easy to spot, harder to “borrow”, and more personal than a plain cover. For children especially, seeing their own name on something makes it special and encourages them to actually use it.
How big is Jada’s Notebook? The notebook measures 6 x 9 inches (roughly 15 x 23 cm) and has 160 lined pages.
