A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Iridian. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Iridian is a rainbow name. Behind the Name files it under the Mexican Spanish spelling Iridián and says it means “related to Iris or rainbows”, ultimately from the Greek word iris. In Greek mythology Iris was the goddess of the rainbow and a messenger of the Olympian gods, usually shown as a winged young woman. Wiktionary adds that iridian is also an English adjective meaning “relating to the rainbow” or “multicolored”.
Behind the Name does not list a nickname for Iridian, but it links the name to Iris, its root, which is used across Europe and makes a natural short form. Most Iridians will keep the whole rainbow of a name, though Iris is ready if she ever wants something shorter.
In fiction, Iridian is a prince. In Tonke Dragt’s Dutch children’s classic The Letter for the King (1962), a mysterious knight called Sir Idian is revealed to be Iridian, crown prince of the realm of Unauwen. Wikipedia says the novel was chosen as the best Dutch youth book of the second half of the 20th century, and it was turned into a Netflix series in 2020.
Iridian is a rare find in the United States. It never appears in the girls’ top 200 of the US Social Security decade tables, from the 1880s through the 2010s. Behind the Name says it entered the US top 1,000 just once, at 886th in 1995, probably thanks to a Mexican singer named Iridián.
A metal shares Iridian’s rainbow root. Wikipedia says the British chemist Smithson Tennant discovered iridium in 1803, in the black residue left over from platinum ore, and named it after Iris, the winged goddess of the rainbow, because so many of its salts were strongly colored. Iridium is one of the rarest elements in Earth’s crust, and a layer of iridium-rich clay helped scientists link the end of the dinosaurs to an asteroid impact.
Whether Iridian is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Iridian on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Iridian’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
