Give Gloria a notebook that's unmistakably hers. Gloria's Notebook has her name in elegant script over a pink watercolor apple blossom cover.
Gloria means “glory” in Latin, and Behind the Name ties it to the Portuguese and Spanish Marian titles Maria da Glória and María de Gloria. Maria da Glória (1819–1853) became Queen Maria II of Portugal. Wikipedia says the name entered regular English use after E. D. E. N. Southworth’s novel Gloria (1891) and later through popular song, including the hymn “Gloria in excelsis Deo”.
Gloria is already short, so many Glorias keep it as it is. Behind the Name lists related forms such as Glory, Gloriana, Glorinda and Glorija, and the Portuguese spelling Glória. Glory is the English word-name cousin that some families use as a pet form.
Gloria Steinem helped found Ms. magazine and became one of the best-known voices of second-wave feminism. Gloria Estefan took the Miami Sound Machine worldwide with hits like “Conga” and “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You”. And Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive” became a lasting anthem after topping the US charts in 1979.
Gloria was a mid-century favorite. US Social Security data has it 40th in the 1920s, 31st in the 1930s and 27th in the 1940s, when more than 105,000 American girls were named Gloria. It was still 42nd in the 1950s and left the top 200 after the 1970s, so most Glorias today are in their 50s and older.
Before it was a given name in English, gloria was already the Latin word for fame and praise, and it is still sung every week in churches as “Gloria in excelsis Deo”. Naming a daughter Gloria is, in a sense, naming her after a hymn.
Gloria’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.
A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Gloria’s Notebook” on the cover tells Gloria it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
How big is Gloria’s Notebook? 6" x 9", or about 15.2 x 22.9 cm. It’s a paperback with 160 lined pages inside.
