A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Gabriela. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Gabriela is the feminine form of Gabriel, says Behind the Name. Gabriel comes from the Hebrew Gavriel, “God is my strong man”, from gever, “strong man, hero”, and el, “God”. Gabriel is the archangel who announces the births of John and Jesus in the New Testament, and in Islamic tradition he dictated the Quran to Muhammad. Wikipedia gives the meaning as “God is my strength”.
Behind the Name lists Gabi and Gaby as diminutives, and Wikipedia adds Gabe. Gabriella, Gabrielle and Gabriele are close relatives in other languages.
Poet Gabriela Mistral was born Lucila Godoy Alcayaga in Vicuña, Chile, in 1889, and grew up in an Andean village. Wikipedia says she was a poet, diplomat, journalist and educator, and in 1945 she became the first Latin American author to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her face is on the 5,000 Chilean peso banknote.
Gabriela peaked around the turn of the century. US Social Security data has it at 134th in the 1990s and 118th in the 2000s, when more than 28,500 American girls were named Gabriela. Wikipedia notes it is used in Portuguese, Spanish, Czech, Polish and other languages.
Another Gabriela won the US Open. Wikipedia says the Argentine tennis player Gabriela Sabatini, born in Buenos Aires in 1970, won the 1990 US Open singles title and the 1988 Wimbledon doubles title with Steffi Graf. She reached world No. 3, and among Open Era players who never reached No. 1 she has the most wins over reigning No. 1 players. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2006.
Whether Gabriela is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Gabriela on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Gabriela’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
Where do I buy it? On Amazon. It’s printed on demand and shipped by Amazon, so delivery and returns go through your usual Amazon account.
