Emma's Notebook puts her name front and center, written in flowing script across a soft watercolor apple blossom design.
Emma began as a short form of Germanic names starting with irmin, meaning “whole” or “great”. It came to England with Emma of Normandy, who married two kings, Ethelred II and later Canute, and was the mother of Edward the Confessor. It became common after the Norman Conquest and was revived in the 18th century. Jane Austen gave it to her matchmaking heroine Emma Woodhouse in Emma (1816).
Em is the simplest nickname, and Emmie and Emmy are the sweet ones. In Finnish, an Emma might be Emmi, and in Dutch and Frisian, Imke. Irma, an old Germanic relative from the same irmin root, makes a lovely middle-name partner.
Emma Watson played Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films. Emma Thompson won Academy Awards for acting in Howards End and for writing Sense and Sensibility. And Emma Stone won Best Actress Oscars for La La Land and Poor Things.
Emma is the comeback queen. In US Social Security data it was 3rd in the 1880s, behind only Mary and Anna, then slowly faded and fell out of the top 200 after the 1940s. It returned in the 1990s, climbed to 3rd in the 2000s and was the number one girls’ name of the 2010s, with more than 195,000 Emmas born. So there are Emmas who are great-grandmothers and Emmas who are still in primary school.
Emma of Normandy is one of very few women to have been queen of England twice, married to two different kings. Behind the Name says Emma became the most popular girls’ name in the US in 2008, and it held the top spot for several years in the 2010s. In Austen’s novel, Emma Woodhouse is “handsome, clever, and rich”, as the famous first line puts it.
Any Emma, of any age. The 6" x 9" size is roomy enough for proper writing and small enough for a handbag or school bag. With 160 plain lined pages there’s no fixed layout, so it can be a diary, a gratitude journal, a study notebook, a recipe book or a home for to-do lists. Notebooks tend to multiply in drawers, but one with her name on the front is instantly hers.
There’s something about seeing your own name in print. It makes a notebook feel like it belongs to you, which is a good reason to fill it. It also means Emma can pick hers out of a pile in a second, at school, at work or on the kitchen counter.
How big is Emma’s Notebook? About the size of a trade paperback book: 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm), 160 lined pages.
