A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Zoe. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Zoe means “life” in Greek, says Behind the Name, and Wikipedia agrees. Hellenized Jews adopted it early on as a translation of Eve, whose Hebrew name has a similar meaning, and two early Christian martyrs carried it. It was common in the Byzantine Empire, but in English it has only been used since the 19th century, sometimes written with a diaeresis as Zoë.
Zoe is already short, so its family is mostly spellings. Behind the Name lists Zoey, Zoie, Zoë and Zowie in English, Zoé in French and Zoya in Russian and Ukrainian. Wikipedia notes that Zoey ranked 42nd for Canadian girls in 2022, not far behind Zoe itself.
Zoe Saldaña is Neytiri in the Avatar films and Gamora in the Marvel films, and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Emilia Pérez; Wikipedia notes she trained as a dancer. Zoe Ball was the first woman to host both the Radio 1 and Radio 2 breakfast shows for the BBC. And Zoë Kravitz was named one of Time’s 100 most influential people in 2022.
Zoe is a 21st-century name in the US. Social Security data has it at 179th in the 1990s, then 55th in the 2000s and 31st in the 2010s, when more than 58,000 American girls were named Zoe. Wikipedia says it has been in the US top 100 since 2000 and was 20th in Canada in 2022, so most Zoes are still in school or just starting out.
A Zoe once ruled an empire. Zoe Porphyrogenita reigned as Byzantine empress in her own right in 1042, alongside her sister Theodora. Wikipedia says the people of Constantinople gathered in Hagia Sophia and proclaimed the two sisters empresses together, and they were crowned on 21 April.
Whether Zoe is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Zoe on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Zoe’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
