A simple, pretty journal made for one person: Matilda. Her name is set in script above pink watercolor apple blossom on the cover.
Matilda comes from the Germanic name Mahthilt, meaning “strength in battle,” from maht, “might, strength,” and hilt, “battle,” says Behind the Name. Saint Matilda was the wife of the 10th-century German king Henry I the Fowler. The Normans brought the name to England; William the Conqueror’s wife was a Matilda, and the 12th-century Empress Matilda later fought for the English throne. Wikipedia gives the same Old High German roots.
Behind the Name links Matilda with Mathilda, Mathilde, Maud, Maude, Tilda, Tillie and Tilly among English and related forms. Mattie and Tilly are the friendliest everyday short forms. Maud was once so common it felt like a separate name.
Matilda of Flanders, who died on November 2, 1083, was Duchess of Normandy and Queen of England. Wikipedia says she was the daughter of Baldwin V, Count of Flanders, married William the Conqueror, served as regent of Normandy during his campaigns, and was crowned queen after the Norman Conquest. She was the mother of at least nine children who survived.
Matilda was a late-Victorian favorite. US Social Security data has it in the top 200 in the 1880s, 1890s and 1900s, highest at 110th in the 1880s, with more than 8,600 American girls named Matilda across those decades. Behind the Name charts Matilda widely in modern Britain, Ireland, New Zealand and elsewhere, reflecting a strong 21st-century revival outside the old SSA window.
Australia’s unofficial anthem names her. Behind the Name notes that “Waltzing Matilda,” written in 1895, helped keep the name familiar in Australian English even when it was quiet on birth lists. In the song, Matilda is a swagman’s bundle, not a girl, which is one of the oddest cameo appearances a royal name ever had.
Whether Matilda is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.
Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Matilda on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
How big is Matilda’s Notebook? It’s 6" x 9" (about 15.2 x 22.9 cm), with 160 lined pages in a paperback cover.
