Where does the name Mabel come from?

Mabel is a medieval form of Amabilis, says Behind the Name, from the Latin for “lovable”. Mabel and Amabel were common in the Middle Ages, then rare after the 15th century, until a revival in the 19th century that may have been helped by C. M. Yonge’s 1853 novel The Heir of Redclyffe, which had characters with both names.

Other forms of Mabel

Behind the Name gives Mae and May as short forms of Mabel, and Mabelle, Mable, Maybelle and Maybelline as variants. Mae is the vintage favorite, and Maybelline will remind some of the cosmetics brand.

Well-known Mabels

Mabel Normand was a silent-film star, director and writer who appeared in twelve films with Charlie Chaplin and helped start his film career; Wikipedia says she is credited as the first film star to get a pie in the face. And British singer Mabel, daughter of Neneh Cherry, had hits with “Finders Keepers” and “Don’t Call Me Up” and won the 2020 Brit Award for British Female Solo Artist.

Mabel’s popularity

Mabel was a top Victorian name in the US. Social Security data has it at 20th in both the 1880s and the 1890s, when nearly 22,000 American girls were named Mabel, and 30th in the 1900s; its biggest decade was the 1910s, with more than 30,000 girls. It is back in Britain: Behind the Name shows it 16th in England and Wales in 2025.

A notebook for every Mabel

Mabel’s Notebook works just as well for a teenager as for a grandmother. It’s 6" x 9", which fits in most bags, with 160 lined pages and no printed layout to work around. Use it as a diary, a school notebook, a planner or a place to collect quotes and ideas. A name on the cover turns an everyday notebook into something personal.

Why choose a personalized notebook?

A plain notebook is useful. One with her name on it is a gift. Seeing “Mabel’s Notebook” on the cover tells Mabel it was chosen for her, not grabbed off a shelf, and that small touch is often what makes people keep a notebook going instead of abandoning it after a week.
