What does the name Doreen mean?

Doreen combines Dora with the name suffix -een, says Behind the Name. It first appeared in the 19th century and was used by the novelist Edna Lyall in her novel Doreen (1894). Dora itself is a short form of Dorothy, Theodora or Isidora. Wikipedia adds that spellings Dorean and Dorine also appear, and that the -een ending relates to the Irish diminutive suffix -ín.

Doreen nicknames and other forms

Behind the Name links Doreen with Dora, Dorothy, Dorothea, Dorine and Dorean in English. Dee, Dot and Dottie come along with Dorothy. Dollie and Dolly are older English pet forms on the Dorothy side of the family.

Some famous Doreens

Doreen Lawrence, Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon, is a British campaigner. Wikipedia says she became a public figure after the racist murder of her son Stephen Lawrence in 1993, and that her work helped lead to major changes in British policing and race-relations law. She was appointed OBE for services to community relations in 2003 and created a life peer in 2013.

Doreen through the decades

Doreen is a mid-century name. US Social Security data has it at 199th in the 1950s, when more than 16,000 girls were named Doreen. Behind the Name last ranked it 959th in the US in 1979, and it once reached 80th in New Zealand, in 1947. Canada had it 86th in 1951, and England and Wales 90th in 1954.

Did you know?

Doreen entered fiction before it entered every classroom. Behind the Name says the name first appeared in the 19th century and that Edna Lyall used it as the title and heroine of her 1894 novel Doreen. The -een ending gives it a softly Irish sound even when the Dora half is Greek for gift.

Who is it for and how she can use it

Whether Doreen is eight or eighty, a 6" x 9" notebook is a comfortable size: big enough to write in properly, slim enough to carry. The 160 lined pages don’t come with a set layout, so she decides what it’s for. Journal, planner, class notes, recipes, travel log or doodle book all work. And with her name on the cover, nobody will mistake it for theirs.

Personalized gifts show you thought about the person, not just the occasion. A notebook with Doreen on the cover is affordable, useful every day and still feels special. It’s also a safe choice when you’re not sure of someone’s style, because everyone needs somewhere to write things down.
